Will Barton Lake Clifton, basketball

The versatile 6-foot-6 junior forward closed out a stellar season leading the No. 1 Lakers to the Class 3A state title and a 28-0 record.

On Saturday, Barton set the tone in the Lakers' 75-50 win over Friendly in the title game, scoring 10 of his game-high 20 points in the first quarter, hitting two three pointers and a highlight dunk. He added nine rebounds and three assists.

He averaged 18 points, 10 rebounds and four assists for the season. Barton, who made the honor roll this year at Lake Clifton, hasn't selected a college.

Breaira Barksdale City, basketball

The senior guard provided a spark and a calming influence in leading the No. 3 Knights to their first state championship. Barksdale had 21 points, including six in overtime, as well as three assists and five steals in the 59-51 title victory over previously unbeaten River Hill. She also had 15 points, six rebounds and two steals in the 59-39 semifinal win over North Hagerstown. Orally committed to UNC-Asheville, Barksdale averaged 9.3 points and 4.4 assists heading into states. She has a 3.0 grade-point average and played Amateur Athletic Union basketball for Team Melo.
