Phil Mickelson shot a 6-under-par 66 to build a two-stroke lead in the CA Championship, a WGC event in Doral, Fla. Tiger Woods, his nemesis on the Blue Monster, was 10 shots behind. Mickelson was at 13-under 131 and will be joined in the final group today by Nick Watney, who shot a 67. Woods, who returned from knee surgery two weeks ago in match play, shot a 70, one stroke better than the day before. "Hopefully, tomorrow I can shoot a good round and at least give myself somewhat of a chance," he said.

Trainer Lake files for bankruptcy

Maryland's leading trainer, Scott Lake, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection this month in federal court in New York. The bankruptcy petition indicates debt exceeding $1 million, including three banks owed a total of more than $750,000, as well as money owed to veterinarians, a feed supplier and a horseshoe business. Lake's attorney, Kenneth Reynolds, said the trainer intends to continue his racing operations and work with creditors. Lake, who trains horses that race at tracks across the Mid-Atlantic region, was the leading Maryland trainer from 2005 through 2008.

Howard lifts Magic to win over Wizards

Dwight Howard had 18 points, 13 rebounds and a career-high seven assists and the visiting Orlando Magic (48-17) held on for a 112-103 win over the Washington Wizards (15-51) for its sixth victory in seven games. Antawn Jamison scored a season-high 36 points for the Wizards.

College football:: Mike Bellotti is stepping down as Oregon's coach to become the school's athletic director, and offensive coordinator Chip Kelly will be promoted to head coach. Bellotti, 58, will replace athletic director Pat Kilkenny.
NFL:: Clancy Pendergast, the defensive coordinator for the Cardinals during their run to last season's Super Bowl, was hired as defensive coordinator for the Chiefs. He joins Kansas City coach Todd Haley, Arizona's offensive coordinator in 2008.
Women's college lacrosse:: Caitlin Madrin-Hill had two goals and five assists to lift visiting Navy (4-1) to a 15-13 win over Canisius (3-4). ...
