Today's Girls Basketball State Semis

March 13, 2009|By Katherine Dunn

Class 2A

Matchup: No. 6 River Hill (26-0)

vs. Parkside (20-4)

Time: 3 p.m.

Outlook: The Hawks are looking for a second title to go with their 2006 crown, and they draw the Salisbury team that won its only championship in 1999. In Saturday night's regional championship win over North Point, the Hawks got exceptional play from their inside duo of 6-foot-4 C Ryann Dannelly (13 ppg, 9.5 rpg) and 6-1 F Alicia Seelaus (13.3 ppg, 12.6 rpg), and they should have the inside edge, too, against the Rams, who are led by 5-4 G Ashaneyia Hyland (20.7 ppg) and 5-8 F Shonte Stevenson (14 ppg, 13 rpg).

The Baltimore Sun's pick: River Hill

Matchup: No. 4 City (22-3)

vs. North Hagerstown (23-2)

Time: 5 p.m.

Outlook: In search of their first state title, the Knights bring balanced scoring and a quick running game against the Hubs, who won their most recent championship in 1985. The Knights, who beat No. 1 Seton Keough early in the season, are led by 5-8 G LaShay Taft (15.9 ppg), who has long range on her three-point shot, and 5-6 G Breaira Barksdale (9.3 ppg), who can score in many ways. The Hubs are led by 6-0 F LaRae Allen (12.8 ppg) and 5-9 G Kirksten Mitchell (17.1 ppg).

The Baltimore Sun's pick: City

Class 1A

Matchup: No. 7 Digital Harbor (22-3)

vs. Allegany (22-2)

Time: 9 p.m.

Outlook: In their first appearance in the final four last season, the Rams fell, 41-39, to eventual champion Pocomoke on a shot with seven seconds to go, making the Rams want to win even more this time. They have a balanced offense fronted by 6-1 F Asia Logan (19 ppg, 16 rpg). The otherwise guard-oriented Rams will face a Campers squad with three solid inside players, led by 6-1 C Leah Womack (16 ppg, 8 rpg). The Campers, who have won 22 straight, lost in the title game a year ago.

The Baltimore Sun's pick: Digital Harbor
