Man charged in setting grandmother on fire
A Baltimore man accused of setting his 85-year-old grandmother on fire during an argument has been charged with attempted first-degree murder, city fire and police officials said. The man was arrested a short time after the attack, said Detective Nicole Monroe, a city police spokeswoman. He was identified as Tyron Markit Mason, 29, police said. Battalion Chief Kevin Cartwright said the grandmother and the man were arguing at her home in the 1400 block of Poplar Grove St. about 5:15 p.m. Sunday when he is said to have doused her with alcohol and set her on fire. Cartwright said the victim, Ethel Henderson, ran from the house as flames burned her head, face and upper body. He said a retired city firefighter who lives on the street heard the woman's screams and extinguished the flames with his shirt. Henderson was taken by ambulance to the burn unit at Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center, where she was being treated and was reported last night in serious condition, Cartwright said.
