Forum on teens, abuse, HIV/AIDS

The Columbia Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc. will sponsor a forum on "Teen Intimidation, Abuse and HIV/AIDS: What Parents, Teens and Adolescents Need to Know and What to Do," 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at the Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory, 11100 Johns Hopkins Road, North Laurel.

A continental breakfast and lunch will be served.

Permissions slips are required for attendees younger than 18. Participants of all ages will be given a pre-session test to assess their knowledge of dating violence and HIV/AIDS, and a post-session test to assess the usefulness of the program.

Adults and youth will participate in separate discussion groups; the groups will report to each other at a working lunch.

Poetry contest

Howard County teens in grades six-12 are invited to submit an original poem to the Howard County Library to win a cash award.

Winners will be asked to read their poems at an event in the spring. Details and entry forms are available at library branches, or online at The deadline to submit up to three entries is March 18.

The contest is sponsored by Friends of the Howard County Library.

Cancer fundraiser

The Ulman Cancer Fund for Young Adults will sponsor a fundraiser, "Eleven - the Event," 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. tomorrow at Howard Community College's Horowitz Center, 10901 Little Patuxent Parkway, Columbia.

The awards dinner commemorates the fund's 11 years of service to young adults with cancer. Vern Yip, host of Deserving Design on HGTV, will screen an episode of the show that includes an interview with a young cancer survivor who was awarded a college scholarship by the Ulman Fund. Cocktails and dinner will be served 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.

Tickets, available at theevent or at the door, are $75 for ages 35 or younger; $100 for ages 36 and older.

Green energy audits

The Green Building Institute, 7761 Waterloo Road, Jessup, will offer "Introduction to Home Energy Audits," a discussion to help homeowners decide on and prepare for an audit or increase energy efficiency, 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. today at Carroll Community College.

The cost is $40 for institute members; $55 for nonmembers. Those who pay at the door must pay by check.

The Green Building Institute, a not-for-profit organization, educates the public and building and design professionals about sustainable building practices and technologies.

Education board

The Policy Committee of the Howard County Board of Education will meet at 10 a.m. tomorrow in the Board Planning Room at the Department of Education, 10910 Route 108, Ellicott City.

A regularly scheduled meeting will be held at 4 p.m. at the same location. The afternoon session, and an evening session that convenes at 7:30 p.m., will begin with a public forum.

The board will hold public hearings during the evening session on Policy 1050, Tobacco-Free Environment; Policy 9240, Student Use and Possession of Tobacco; and Policy 7060, Royalties.
