CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. -Sophomore Sarah Mollison recorded a career-high six goals as the third-ranked Maryland women's lacrosse team upended No. 2 Virginia, 17-11, last night at Klockner Stadium.

A 4-0 run gave Maryland (4-0, 2-0 Atlantic Coast Conference) its largest lead of the game, 9-4, with 4:29 remaining in the first half. Mollison scored the last two goals in the run.

But Virginia (4-1, 1-1) battled back to end the half as Brittany Kalkstein scored on a free-position attempt with 30 seconds remaining and, after a yellow card to Karissa Taylor, Jenny Hauser scored with no time remaining to make the score 9-6 at halftime.

The Cavaliers responded with a goal to start the second half, with Blair Weymouth scoring the third consecutive free-position goal for Virginia.

Caitlyn McFadden finally stopped the run at 24:15 with a low shot from the center to give Maryland a three-goal lead. After a goal from Virginia, Karri Ellen Johnson caused a turnover, secured the ground ball and nailed a free-position shot to make it 11-8 at 20:43.

From there, Johnson and Mollison helped put away Virginia.
