An administrator at a Howard County middle school has been recognized with a national award honoring top assistant principals. Melissa Shindel of Patuxent Valley Middle School in Jessup was chosen from among three finalists for the award, which is given annually by the National Association of Secondary School Principals. The association noted Shindel's efforts in planning learning fairs and instructional workshops, reviving the student government association and launching peer tutoring programs and mentoring workshops. Shindel will receive $5,000, which can be used in her school or for personal professional development.

Man dies in Southeast Baltimore shooting

Police were investigating a homicide in Southeast Baltimore last night, authorities said. Two men were involved in a shooting at 9:37 p.m. in the 3700 block of E. Lombard St., said Detective Nicole Monroe, a police spokeswoman. One man was dead at the scene, she said; the condition of the other person involved was unavailable. Police were investigating.

15-month prison term in prostitution scheme

A federal judge sentenced a Frederick woman to prison for a prostitution scheme organized at Maryland and Virginia brothels. Adriana Delcid, 42, was sentenced yesterday to 15 months in prison after she pleaded guilty to money laundering charges.
