Healthy diet program at 8 supermarkets

County residents can learn about eating for good health during Good Food for Good Health Weekends at local supermarkets.

Health educators will answer questions about nutrition and distribute free low-fat recipes and other information for eight weekends. The weekends are sponsored by the Anne Arundel County Health Department's Learn to Live program and will be available at the following stores:

* Lauer's Supermarket, 8095 A Edwin Raynor Blvd., Pasadena, 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Friday; 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday; and 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. March 8.

* Lauer's Supermarket, 8479 Fort Smallwood Road, Pasadena, 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. March 13; 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. March 14; and 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. March 15.

* Graul's, 1388 Cape St. Claire Road, Annapolis, 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. March 20; 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. March 21; and 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. March 22.

* Graul's, 607 Taylor Ave., Annapolis, 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. March 27; 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. March 28; 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. March 29.

* Box 'N' Save, 7931 Baltimore-Annapolis Blvd., Glen Burnie, 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. April 24; 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. April 25; and 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. April 26.

* Giant Food, 6626 Ritchie Highway, Glen Burnie, 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. May 1; 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. May 2; 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. May 3.

* Safeway, 1781 Forest Drive, Annapolis, 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. May 15; 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. May 16; and 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. May 17.

* Safeway, 2644 Chapel Lake Drive, Gambrills, 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. May 29; 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. May 30; and 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. May 31.

Calendar

Free cancer screening : Anne Arundel County Health Department provides free cervical cancer screening to county women 40 and older who are income-eligible and who have no health insurance or whose health insurance does not pay for Pap tests. Pap tests provide detection of cervical cancer at an early stage when it is highly curable. 410-222-6180.

Spanish-language line : A Spanish-speaking operator will answer calls to the Aprenda a Vivir Spanish Language Line of the Anne Arundel County Health Department from 9 a.m. to noon Tuesdays and Thursdays (410-222-4479). Callers can leave messages at other times. Information about community health services and free Spanish-language materials are available.

A Healthy Eating Kit, with tips on nutrition and Hispanic recipes, and a Quit Smoking Kit, with a step-by-step guide, Cambie un Habito, to stop smoking permanently will be available. Cambie un Habito can be downloaded from the Health Department's Spanish-language Web site, aasalud.org. Click "Aprenda a Vivir" on the navigation bar, and then click on "Dejar de Fumar." A Breast and Cervical Cancer Kit, with information on prevention and treatment, is also available. 410-222-4479, or aasalud.org.

Tobacco-free kids : Schools and community groups interested in participating in Tobacco-Free Kids Week can reserve free activity planning kits from Anne Arundel County Health Department. The kits can be requested from the Learn to Live Line, 410-222-7979, or the TFK Week page of the Smoking Stinks Web site, smokingstinks.org.

The county's 14th Tobacco-Free Kids Week, when children and adults celebrate smoke-free living, will run from today through Saturday. The activity kit includes ideas for anti-tobacco activities and an order form for free supplies.

Pregnancy, childbirth classes : Baltimore Washington Medical Center, 301 Hospital Drive, Glen Burnie, offers information on pregnancy, childbirth education, an anesthesia class, preparation for multiple births and classes on breast-feeding, infant care and infant cardiopulmonary resuscitation.

* An infant and child CPR Heartsaver Certification class is offered some Fridays and Saturdays. Pregnancy Yoga and Mommy and Me Yoga are also available.

* A class for baby sitters is offered some Saturdays, and a class for siblings is also offered some Saturdays.

Help with grieving : Hospice of the Chesapeake's Spiritual & Bereavement Care Center has bereavement support groups that are to begin meeting this month.

* A bereavement support group for widows and widowers will meet from 3 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. Wednesdays, March 11 through April 15; a group also meets from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Wednesdays, May 20 through June 24, at the Spiritual & Bereavement Care Center's Annapolis offices, 445 Defense Highway.

* In partnership with Baltimore Washington Medical Center, an adult bereavement support group will be offered from 5 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. Thursdays, May 7 through June 11.

Sessions are held at Baltimore Washington Medical Center, 301 Hospital Drive, 2nd floor, Glen Burnie.
