Perry Hall man dies of injuries in house fire

Yan Chen, 53, who was injured while trying to rescue his wife and grandchild during a fire Friday at his Perry Hall home, died of his injuries over the weekend, authorities said. Chen was one of six members of an extended family living in a home in the 5000 block of Forge Haven Drive. He had initially escaped unharmed, but went back inside. Two neighbors found Chen collapsed in the foyer and carried him to safety, but he had suffered severe smoke inhalation and serious burns. He died Saturday at Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center, Baltimore County Fire Department spokeswoman Elise Armacost said yesterday. The conditions of the five other relatives - Chen's wife, a father and mother, and two children - were not available, though all were less seriously injured. Armacost said the cause of the fire remains under investigation.

Teen charged in attack on Annapolis woman, niece

An Annapolis teenager was arrested Monday after a boy broke into a woman's apartment, sexually assaulted her, slashed her with a knife and forced her 12-year-old niece to go to another apartment with him, according to police and court documents. About 9:30 a.m., a teenager armed with two knives kicked open the door to an apartment in the first block of Carver St. and ordered a woman to take her pants off, according to documents released yesterday. The boy cut the woman's throat, face and hands, forced her to perform a sex act and told her that he was going to kill her, according to the documents. The boy pushed the woman out of the apartment, then grabbed her 12-year-old niece, took off her clothes, and forced her into a bedroom of another apartment and locked the door, according to the documents. Officers broke down the bedroom door, where they found the boy and the girl, who appeared to be uninjured, according to the documents. Juan Carlos Conseco-Figueroa, 17, of the first block of Carver St., was charged as an adult with attempted first-degree murder, first-degree assault, a first-degree sex offense, attempted first-degree rape, kidnapping and other charges. He is being held at the Anne Arundel County Detention Center.
