A fish wholesaler and his son pleaded guilty in the largest investigation of illegal commercial fishing in the Chesapeake Bay and Potomac River. The Justice Department said Robert Moore Sr. and his son Robert Moore Jr. entered their pleas yesterday in U.S. District Court in Washington. The elder Moore owns Cannon Seafood Inc. in Georgetown, where his son also works. Prosecutors said the Moores and at least three fishermen illegally harvested and sold hundreds of thousands of pounds of striped bass, which are highly protected. Under terms of a plea agreement, Cannon Seafood has agreed to pay a fine of $80,000 and pay $28,000 in restitution to the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation. Moore Sr. has agreed to pay a $40,000 fine and pay $15,000 in restitution to the NFWF, and Moore Jr. has agreed to pay a $30,000 fine and pay $10,000 in restitution to the same foundation. The court set a sentencing date of May 8.

Auto racing: : Kyle Busch and Jeff Gordon won qualifying races in Daytona Beach, Fla., for Sunday's season-opening Sprint Cup event, the Daytona 500. By winning the Gatorade Duels races, Busch and Gordon will start in the second row Sunday. Four spots were up for grabs to cars not otherwise qualified for NASCAR's biggest event of the year. Those went to A.J. Allmendinger, Jeremy Mayfield, Scott Riggs and Regan Smith. Martin Truex Jr. and Mark Martin earned the top two positions in qualifying Sunday.

NFL: : Panthers owner and former Baltimore Colt Jerry Richardson, 72, cleared another hurdle in his recovery from a heart transplant when he was released from the Carolinas Medical Center, 12 days after the surgery. ...
