Bill would have voters pick Senate replacements
Pointing to problems that arose from filling seats left empty by President Barack Obama's election and Cabinet selections, some Maryland lawmakers want voters - not the governor - to select U.S. Senate replacements. A measure proposed by Del. Saqib Ali, a Montgomery County Democrat, would require the governor to call a special election for an empty Senate seat, the way congressional vacancies are filled. Ali's measure would take effect in 2015, after Gov. Martin O'Malley, a Democrat, has left office. Del. William J. Frank, a Baltimore County Republican, has proposed a similar measure, but it would take effect in July.
