The canine Super Bowl

For some folks, the real Super Bowl wasn't played last Sunday; it's next week. Those folks would be those of us who own or love or share living quarters with four-footed athletes who don't necessarily throw passes or score touchdowns. These athletes just strut their bone structure and gorgeous faces down the green carpet at the Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show.

Though some people might laugh at Westminster devotees, the winners here are remembered for generations and become the stuff of legend.

CNBC has a one-hour special on the dog show airing at 9 tonight. The competition airs Monday and Tuesday on cable channel USA.

My only quarrel with the special is the host, Trish Regan of CNBC, and her lack of knowledge about anything to do with dogs. (She admits she does not have one.)

Because the show is airing on a business channel, we get interviews with businessmen about how well dog food and paraphernalia are selling. But anybody who knows anything about these champions and owners knows it's not about the money. (9 p.m., USA) ***
