Barbaro's brother finishes 10th in debut

horse racing

Nicanor's debut wasn't one to remember. Hurting himself on his first stride, the 3-year-old full brother of 2006 Kentucky Derby winner Barbaro finished 10th of 12 horses in a one-mile maiden race at Gulfstream Park in Hallandale Beach, Fla., yesterday, hardly an encouraging step toward what his connections hoped would be a journey into this year's Triple Crown races. Under jockey Edgar Prado, who was aboard ill-fated Barbaro three years ago, Nicanor made a move near the half-mile mark but never got close to the lead and eventually slowed to little more than a gallop, beaten by 25 lengths by 30-1 shot Warrior's Reward. It was over at the start, when Nicanor essentially stumbled over his own feet. It's unclear when Nicanor will run again; his connections will have to wait to see how severe the injury is before figuring out the next move.

Ovechkin's goals in 3rd lift Caps past Wings, 4-2

Alex Ovechkin broke a third-period tie with another highlight-reel goal and added a power-play score less than two minutes later in the host Washington Capitals' 4-2 victory over Detroit that extended the Red Wings' losing streak to a season-high five games. Ovechkin looked to have overskated a feed from Viktor Kozlov along the left wing but reached behind himself, sneaked the puck through his own legs and used defenseman Brian Rafalski as a shield before pushing a low shot past Ty Conklin with 7:08 remaining. Detroit's Kirk Maltby was penalized for cross-checking with 5:58 left, and, six second later, Ovechkin popped in Nicklas Backstrom's rebound from the left post for his team-high 33rd goal. Mike Green and Kozlov also scored for Washington, which halted a two-game losing streak. Ville Leino and Johan Franzen had Detroit's goals.

Maple Leafs: : All-Star defenseman Tomas Kaberle is expected to be out of the lineup for four weeks after breaking a bone in his right hand.
