Report: Brother says McGwire used steroids


Mark McGwire's youngest brother says in a book proposal that he injected the former baseball star with steroids, according to Jay McGwire is circulating a manuscript titled The McGwire Family Secret: The Truth about Steroids, a Slugger and Ultimate Redemption, the Web site reported Wednesday. Jay McGwire, a bodybuilder, said his brother started using steroids in 1994 and that he injected Mark with Deca-Durabolin. Mark McGwire has denied using illegal performance-enhancing drugs.

Brewers:: First baseman Prince Fielder and Milwaukee reached a preliminary agreement on a two-year, $18 million contract. Fielder was eligible for arbitration for the first time. He can become a free agent after the 2011 season.

Obituary:: Bill Werber, who had been the oldest living former major league player and was from Berwyn, died yesterday in Charlotte, N.C. He was 100. Werber, mainly a third baseman, won a World Series with the Reds in 1940 and finished his 11-year big league career in 1942. He was a teammate of Babe Ruth's with the Yankees. He also was the first basketball All-American at Duke and became a successful businessman in Maryland.

Et cetera:: Cardinals third baseman Troy Glaus will be sidelined for about three months after arthroscopic surgery on his right shoulder. ... Mariners left-hander Erik Bedard, a former Oriole, is recovered from shoulder surgery and ready for the start of spring training. ... Outfielder Jayson Werth, a former Orioles prospect, completed a two-year, $10 million contract with the Phillies to avoid salary arbitration. ... Infielder Alex Cora and the Mets completed a one-year, $2 million contract.

7-time All-Star Mourning retires after 15 seasons


Alonzo Mourning decided to retire rather than mount another NBA comeback. The seven-time All-Star center said he won't return from a devastating leg injury Dec. 19, 2007 - the fourth anniversary of his lifesaving kidney transplant. He had been working out at the Miami Heat's complex. Mourning, 38, played at Georgetown and was the second pick in the 1992 draft by the Charlotte Hornets. He spent the majority of his 15-season career with the Heat, winning an NBA title in 2006.

All-Star Game: : Magic center Dwight Howard received a record 3,150,181 votes from fans, becoming the first player with 3 million, to lead this season's All-Star teams. The Feb. 15 game in Phoenix will mark the third All-Star trip for Howard. The Heat's Dwyane Wade (2,741,413) and Pistons' Allen Iverson (1,804,649) will be in the Eastern Conference's backcourt, with the Cavaliers' LeBron James (2,940,823) and Celtics' Kevin Garnett (2,066,833) as the forwards and Howard as the center. The Lakers' Kobe Bryant (2,805,397) led the Western Conference in votes and will be joined at guard by the Hornets' Chris Paul (2,134,798). The Rockets' Yao Ming (2,532,958) is the center, and the forwards are the Spurs' Tim Duncan (2,578,168) and Suns' Amare Stoudemire (1,460,429).

Grizzlies: : Memphis fired second-year coach Marc Iavaroni after an 11-30 start. A team spokesman confirmed Iavaroni's dismissal to the Associated Press but wouldn't say who would coach the Grizzlies tonight against the Knicks in New York.

Celtics 90, Magic 80: : Paul Pierce had 27 points and 10 rebounds, and visiting Boston (36-9) beat Orlando (33-9) for the Celtics' seventh straight win.

Buccaneers hire Bates as defensive coordinator


New Tampa Bay Buccaneers coach Raheem Morris hired Jim Bates to replace him as defensive coordinator. Morris was promoted from defensive backs coach to defensive coordinator Christmas Day, but he wound up with his first head coaching job after Jon Gruden was fired last week. Bates has been an NFL defensive coordinator for eight seasons, most recently with the Denver Broncos in 2007.

Giants:: Wide receiver Taye Biddle is recovering from gunshot wounds to his hand and leg after he was shot in Decatur, Ga. Decatur police said Biddle was shot outside a residence and treated and released from a hospital. No arrests have been made. ... Coach Tom Coughlin hired Jets assistant Jim Herrmann as linebackers coach to replace Bill Sheridan, promoted Monday to defensive coordinator.

Et cetera: : Defensive coordinator Mike Trgovac turned down a contract offer to remain on Panthers coach John Fox's staff, the same day linebackers coach Ken Flajole became the Rams' defensive coordinator and secondary coach Tim Lewis accepted a similar position with the Seahawks. ... Rams coach Steve Spagnuolo hired Eagles quarterbacks coach Pat Shurmur as offensive coordinator. ... The death of former NFL defensive lineman Shane Dronett was ruled a suicide by the Gwinnett County (Ga.) medical examiner. Dronett, 38, was found dead at his home Wednesday.
