Westminster teenager dies in single-car crash
A Westminster teen was killed yesterday when he lost control of his SUV on an icy road and ran into a telephone pole, authorities said. Maryland State Police said that Nicholas Byron, 17, died shortly after 5 a.m. at the scene of the crash near Union Mills. Police said sleet and rain fell Saturday night in Carroll County and that roads iced over as the temperature fell; a number of traffic accidents were reported. Police say the speed of Byron's GMC Jimmy was a factor in the crash. No one else was in the SUV, and no other vehicles were involved.

Man in critical condition after weekend crash
A Sykesville man remained in critical condition yesterday at Maryland Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore after a fatal head-on collision early Saturday, according to the Carroll County Sheriff's Office. Richard Dixon, 60, of Sykesville was injured when the Chevrolet truck he was driving north on Route 32 north of Nottingham Road near Westminster about 5 a.m. was struck by a 2005 Hyundai Tiburon driven south by Timothy Andrew Mahoney, 21, of Sykesville, police said. Mahoney's vehicle crossed the double yellow center line on a curve and crashed head-on into the truck, forcing the truck over a guardrail, police said. Mahoney was pronounced dead at the scene. In Mahoney's car, officers said, they found a partial case of beer. They said the use of alcohol and excessive speed on Mahoney's part contributed to the crash.
