Banneker-Douglass events
The Banneker-Douglass Museum, 84 Franklin St., Annapolis, will hold events related to the presidential inauguration and the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr.'s birthday.
An exhibit of an inaugural quilt, "Journey to the White House," documenting Barack Obama's life story and political trek to the presidency, will be held Saturday.
Joan M. E. Gaither, chair of Undergraduate Art Education at the Maryland Institute College of Art, began the quilt in June. It features images and text documenting Obama's rise to the White House as part of a Baltimore album-style quilt. Gaither and community members will finish the quilt from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday. The quilt will hang in the museum lobby through February.
Visitors are invited to the museum from 1 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. Jan. 19 to create a quilt square of their personal story based on the "Journey to the White House" quilt. The museum will provide art supplies. The program is free, but registration is requested.
The museum will honor King with a day of volunteer service from 11 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Jan. 19. The "Day On, Not a Day Off" will provide several volunteer opportunities through several organizations. All volunteers younger than 16 must be accompanied by an adult. Registration is requested at Fay@volunteerannearundel.org. Information: 410-216-6180.
