January 07, 2009

Margaret B. "Peggy" Krebs, a longtime Ruxton resident who was known for her homemade jams and chocolate sauce, died Friday of a stroke at Greater Baltimore Medical Center. She was 91.

Margaret Lillington Boyden was born in Washington and raised near Glendale Heights in Prince George's County. She was educated in public and private schools, including St. Catherine's School in Richmond, Va.

She attended American University and worked in the offices of the Washington National Cathedral before her 1941 marriage to Leon A. "Krebbie" Krebs.

A Ruxton resident since 1941, Mrs. Krebs was an avid gardener and a member of the Hardy Garden Club.

She was a member of the Junior League and had been president of the Maryland chapter of the National Society of Colonial Dames from 1987 to 1990.

Mrs. Krebs also headed the boards of the Mount Clare Mansion in Carroll Park, the American Wing of the Baltimore Museum of Art and the Women's Committee of the Hampton Mansion in Towson.

An accomplished cook, Mrs. Krebs enjoyed entertaining family and friends.

"She was a natural-born chef and was always being asked for jars of her preserves and chocolate sauce," said her daughter, Susan Cornell Krebs, a jazz vocalist who lives in Los Angeles.

Mrs. Krebs enjoyed traveling to Switzerland, where she visited Krebs family members. She was one of the oldest members of the L'Hirondelle Club in Ruxton.

Her husband, a civil engineer who retired in the early 1970s from the French Potash Co., died in 1999.

She was a communicant of the Episcopal Church of the Good Shepherd, Boyce and Carrollton avenues, Ruxton, where a memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. today.

Also surviving are a son, John Hanson Krebs of Nantucket, Mass.; a brother, John Hanson Boyden of Chestertown; and a sister, Mary McRea Boyden of Ruxton.
