Kennedy hosts 'Honors'

December 30, 2008|By DAVID ZURAWIK

It is only fitting in a year when politics so dominated television that the networks' new fall season was largely ignored in favor of presidential coverage that the last big prime-time entertainment special of the season is steeped in politics.

I am talking about the sublime Kennedy Center Honors at 9 tonight on CBS. This is the 31st, and I can't remember more than two that didn't leave me feeling inspired.

Again, there is a great and diverse cast of recipients: choreographer Twyla Tharp, actor Morgan Freeman, singer George Jones, singer and film director Barbra Streisand, and rock musicians Pete Townshend and Roger Daltrey.

The political part, of course, involves the host, Caroline Kennedy. Tonight's show was taped Dec. 7, two days after it became known that she was actively seeking the U.S. Senate seat from New York that will be vacated by Hillary Clinton, who is in line to become secretary of state. Some viewers will be scrutinizing Kennedy's every word, gesture and turn through the political prism of her desire to become a senator. (9 p.m., WJZ-Channel 13)

Late-night guests Actor Daniel Radcliffe visits Late Night with Conan O'Brien. Actor and musician Kevin Bacon performs with his band on Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson.
