Baker's late layup lifts Cavaliers, 88-84, in teams' ACC opener

Calvin Baker made a layup with 10 seconds left in overtime to break a tie and help visiting Virginia to an 88-84 victory over Georgia Tech last night in both teams' Atlantic Coast Conference opener.

Mike Scott added two free throws with two seconds left for Virginia (6-4, 1-0 ACC).

Tech's Gani Lawal stole a pass and scored with 15 seconds left to tie it at 84.

Sylven Landesberg led Virginia with 26 points, and Jamil Tucker added 15.

Lawal led the Yellow Jackets (7-4, 0-1 ACC) with 21 points, and Lewis Clinch and Iman Shumpert added 18 points each.

Tucker hit a three-point basket for Virginia with 14.7 seconds left in regulation to tie it at 74. Georgia Tech's Iman Shumpert missed a 15-foot jumper with two seconds remaining to send it to overtime.

Clinch hit a three-pointer with 50 seconds left in regulation for a 72-69 Tech lead. After a basket by Landesberg, Clinch added two free throws for a 74-71 Tech lead with 26 seconds left.

The Yellow Jackets fell to 2-7 in ACC openers under coach Paul Hewitt.

Virginia had lost 12 of its previous 13 ACC openers before yesterday.

The Yellow Jackets might have won, but missed too many free throws, going 16-for-33 (48.5 percent).

No. 1 North Carolina 97, Rutgers 75: : Tyler Hansbrough had 26 points and 10 rebounds, and the host Tar Heels routed the Scarlet Knights (9-4) for their school-record 12th straight double-figure win.

North Carolina (12-0) surpassed the previous mark of consecutive blowouts set by the 1992-93 team that went on to win the national championship. No opponent has come within 15 points of these Tar Heels.

No. 13 UCLA 78, Louisiana Tech 55: : Josh Shipp returned from a two-game absence to score 16 points, and the host Bruins never trailed in beating the outmanned Bulldogs (6-7).

UCLA (10-2) took a 20-point halftime lead in breezing to its sixth straight victory. They have won those six games by an average of 26.3 points.

Shipp missed one-sided victories over Mercer and Wyoming with a sprained ligament in his left thumb.

No. 10 Purdue 59, Valparaiso 45: : E'Twaun Moore scored 14 points to help the host Boilermakers beat the Crusaders for their sixth consecutive victory.

The Boilermakers led by two at halftime but held the Crusaders to 28 percent shooting after the break. The Boilermakers hit six of 14 three-pointers in the second half to expand the lead.
