Hot Buttons

Taking aim

With the Saints out of the playoffs, QB Drew Brees needs 753 passing yards in his final two games to overtake Dan Marino's single-season record (5,084). Brees should get a bunch against the Lions today. The key will be next week's game against Carolina, which might need to win for seeding purposes. Marino's record should survive.

Taking heat

Jim Zorn's Redskins started the season 6-2, but after losing five of six, the coach's job security is in question. Last week, he pointed the finger at himself. He doesn't need to do that when he has team owner Dan Snyder poised to make still another rash decision. Is Jim Fassel next?

Time off

DT Albert Haynesworth has had a terrific season, but a sprained knee ligament will keep him out of the Titans' last two regular-season games, including today's battle for the No. 1 AFC seed with Pittsburgh. The Titans are 3-13 since 2004 without Haynesworth. To make it worse, DE Kyle Vanden Bosch is also out the last two games.

Time's up

Carl Peterson's 20-year reign running the Chiefs will end next week. Although the Chiefs won 176 games and four AFC West titles, and reached one AFC championship game, they never reached the Super Bowl under Peterson. A run of bad drafts and the recent slide to futility led to change in Kansas City.
