Marriotts Ridge Women's Ensemble set to perform this afternoon

Charity's Closet will host a Christmas performance from 2 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. today. The Marriotts Ridge High School Women's Ensemble, under the direction of Terry Eberhardt, will perform old-fashioned Christmas carols in front of Second Childhood/Charity's Closet, 9090 Frederick Road, Ellicott City.

Hot chocolate will be provided. All guests will receive a value coupon for Charity's Closet. The performance is free.

Charity's Closet is a women's and teen's thrift shop run by teen girls, where all items cost $5. Proceeds benefit Success In Style, which provides free business wardrobes and coaching to women in crisis who are seeking employment.

Groups commemorate birth of Jesus

The Secular Franciscans of St. Joseph Cupertino Fraternity, members of the St. Louis Parish Catholic Youth Ministry and the Conventual Franciscan Friars of the Shrine of St. Anthony will commemorate the birth of Jesus in the manner of St. Francis of Assisi in the town of Greccio, Italy, at the Shrine, 12290 Folly Quarter Road, Ellicott City.

Christmas Eve Mass on Dec. 24 will begin with poetry and Christmas carols at 9:30 p.m. Mass will be celebrated at 10 p.m. There will be a reception in the Papal Dining Room after Mass.

A New Year's Prayer Vigil will be held at 9 p.m. Dec. 31. There will be a presentation at 9:30 p.m. called "A fireside chat: from Chronos time to Kairos moment!" At 10 p.m., there will be adoration in the chapel, followed by time for reconciliation. Mass will be celebrated at midnight, with breakfast served at 1 a.m.

Christmas services scheduled

First Evangelical Lutheran Church, 3604 Chatham Road, Ellicott City, will hold its Christmas Eve services at 4 p.m., 6 p.m., 8 p.m., and 10 p.m. and feature candlelight, lessons and carols. The 4 p.m. service is for families with small children, and the message is by Vicar Mark Parker. Information: 410-465-2977.

The Church of the Resurrection, 3175 Paulskirk Drive, Ellicott City, will hold a Christmas Concert and Sing-Along at 5 p.m. Dec. 21. Free to all, the program features traditional and contemporary carols, children's choir and brass ensemble.

Firefighters sponsor winter dance

The Elkridge Volunteer Fire Department's Junior Firefighters will sponsor a "Winter Wonderland" youth dance for ages 9 to 15 from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. Jan. 17 at the firehouse.

Moms to meet : The MOMS Club of Ellicott City South, part of a nonprofit international organization that provides support for mothers who have chosen to stay home to raise children, meets to socialize, bring their children together and hear speakers. A nursery is open during meetings, although children are welcome to remain with their parents. Outings and activities are also planned, including a monthly event called "MOMS Night Out."
