Frederick annexes land for stores, homes

FREDERICK: Elected officials in Frederick have approved the annexation of two properties, the first to be added to the city in nearly a decade. One property is the site of a future Wegmans supermarket and Lowe's home improvement store on 43 acres at Route 26 and Wormans Mill Road. The other annexation of 72 acres will allow 345 new housing units to be added to the Homewood retirement community at U.S. Route 15 and Willow Road. Both annexations were approved on votes of 5-0. The two developments were among 14 proposed this year after city officials resolved a chronic water shortage and declared Frederick ready to grow again. In all, landowners on the city's borders proposed annexing 2,300 acres for retail, office and housing projects. City officials said they intended to proceed slowly, with no more than a few boundary expansions at first.

Baltimore man accused of robbing bank in N.Y.

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y.: A Maryland man is accused of holding up a suburban Albany bank at gunpoint and leading police on a chase that included gunfire and ended in a crash 25 miles away in Saratoga Springs, authorities said yesterday. Colonie town police said Daniel Freeland, 62, of Baltimore robbed a bank Thursday afternoon and fled in a sport utility vehicle that was spotted by a state trooper on Interstate 87. When troopers approached the SUV on foot at a railroad crossing, one thought he saw the suspect point a gun at him and fired twice, missing both times, authorities said. Police say Freeland then drove through the crossing barriers after the train passed and sped south on Route 50. The SUV landed on its roof after a collision at a Saratoga intersection, where Freeland was caught after a brief struggle. Authorities said an undisclosed amount of cash from the bank and a handgun were recovered. Freeland is being held without bail in Albany County Jail on several charges, including robbery.
