Local slopes gearing up for the new ski season

It's time to unearth those skis from their hibernation; it's ski season at area resorts. Whether you're looking for local slopes or planning to take a wintertime vacation, there's plenty to keep you busy at mountain resorts. Staffs are firing up snow machines, packing the powder and opening more trails and slopes than before. Here's a list of ski spots in Maryland, Pennsylvania, Virginia and West Virginia.

Maryland

Wisp at Deep Creek Mountain Resort: / 296 Marsh Hill Road, McHenry / The resort includes 32 slopes and 10 1/2 miles of trails, accessible by two quad chairlifts, five triple lifts, three carpet lifts and four surface tows. Ski schools and private lessons are available. Snow tubing opened last week, and Wisp also has a mountain coaster open year-round that winds through the forest. Pennsylvania

Blue Knob: / 1418 Overland Pass, Claysburg / Along with 34 powdery trails, Blue Knob boasts an obstacle-filled terrain park, cross-country skiing rentals and group and private lessons. There is a tubing park as well. Call 814-239-5111 or go to blueknob.com.

Eagle Rock Resort: / 1031 Valley of Lakes, Hazelton / Eagle Rock has 14 slopes, a tubing park, a skating rink and more. A snowboarding area, spa and fitness center are available, too. Call 570-384-3223 or go to eaglerockresort.com.

Hidden Valley Four Seasons Resort: / 1 Craighead Drive, Hidden Valley / With six lanes in the snow-tubing area, 28 slopes and many kilometers for cross-country skiing, this resort promises a busy time. There is also a gym and spa. Call 814-443-8000 or go to hiddenvalleyresort.com.

Liberty Mountain Resort and Conference Center: / 78 Country Club Trail, Carroll Valley / In addition to its 20 trails, three terrain parks, tubing and ski schools, Ski Liberty is debuting new jumps around the mountain this season. Seven Springs Mountain Resort: / 777 Waterwheel Drive, Seven Springs / Seven Springs has magic carpet for tubing and some energy-efficient snow-making towers. There are 33 slopes and 11 tubing chutes on 285 acres. Call 800-452-2223 or go to 7springs.com.

Ski Denton: / U.S. 6, Coudersport / Ski Denton features 23 slopes and includes a terrain park, a cross-country area, snow tubing and a snack bar. Call 814-435-2115 or go to skidenton.com.

Ski Roundtop: / 925 Roundtop Road, Lewisberry / Roundtop contains 16 trails, three terrain parks, 10 lifts and a half-pipe. Call 717-432-9631 or go to skiroundtop.com.

Ski Sawmill Family Resort: / 383 Oregon Hill Road, Morris / Sawmill features 12 trails, three lifts and tubing park. Sawmill is currently open weekends. Call 800-532-7669 or go to skisawmill.com.

Virginia

The Homestead: / 1766 Homestead Drive, Hot Springs / One main slope breaks into various trails, a terrain park, tubing area, an Olympic-size ice-skating rink, cross-country skiing and guided snowmobile areas. Call 800-838-1766 or go to thehomestead.com.

Massanutten Resort: / 1822 Resort Drive, McGaheysville / With 14 trails along with a large tubing park, new lift and indoor water park, this resort is enough to keep winter enthusiasts busy. The resort also features four restaurants and a cafeteria. Call 800-207-6277 or go to massresort.com.

Wintergreen Resort: / Route 664, Wintergreen / This resort has 26 trails, 14 of which are lit at night, a terrain park for snowboarders and two tubing parks. Call 800-266-2444 or go to wintergreenresort.com.

West Virginia

Canaan Valley Resort and Conference Center: / HC 70, Davis / Canaan offers snowboarding and skiing on its 39 slopes, as well as cross-country skiing through 18 kilometers of trails. Other activities include tubing and ice-skating. Call 800-622-4121 or go to canaanresort.com.

Snowshoe Mountain Resort: / 10 Snowshoe Drive, Snowshoe / Snowshoe has been busy improving more than 60 trails. It plans to have 26 additional acres on one run, as well as improved conditions in the terrain park. The resort continues to offer tubing and a large indoor facility called the Big Top, which has video games, skee-ball, billiards, a 24-foot climbing wall, an inflatable slide, flat-screen TVs and a food court.
