Western jumps out in first half, routs Dunbar

Akeema Richards scored 11 of her 15 points in the first half as visiting Western (2-4) handed Dunbar (3-1) its first loss, 53-29, yesterday.

The West Virginia-bound senior mixed mid-range jump shots with drives to the basket to give the No. 3 Doves a 28-14 halftime lead. She scored eight points in the second quarter.

Keirah Hicks added nine points for Western.

Michelle Wright, who came into the game averaging 23.7 points for the Poets, was held to 12 as the Doves gave her different looks on defense.


No. 1 ST. FRANCES 83, GILMAN 48:: Terrell Vinson had 21 points and 12 rebounds as the Panthers (6-1) defeated the visiting Greyhounds. Carlos Corbin added 19 points.

No. 5 WALBROOK 64, DOUGLASS 48:: Roscoe Smith had 21 points and 14 rebounds as the Warriors (4-1) defeated the visiting Ducks. The junior had 11 points in the fourth quarter after sitting out the third with a minor injury.

No. 6 DIGITAL HARBOR 61, MERVO 50:: George Jackson led all scorers with 25 points as the visiting Rams (4-0) defeated the Mustangs. Jackson also had 10 assists.

No. 13 EDMONDSON 65, SOUTHWESTERN 60:: Stanton Kidd scored 11 of his game-high 21 points in the second half as the Red Storm (4-0) came back to defeat the visiting Sabers. Jerry Lockehart added 19 points for the Red Storm.

POLY 65, CARVER 55:: Montray Clemens scored 14 of his 20 points in the second half as the Engineers (1-3) defeated the visiting Bears.
