Real 'High School Musical'

How many times can the high-school-musical narrative be retold and replayed? The ABC newsmagazine 20/20 takes a whack at this evergreen tonight with "Drama High: The Making of a High School Musical," which offers a backstage look at the making of a production of The Wiz at a high school in Virginia.

There is no shortage of energy, excitement, hope and heartbreak as more than 100 students try out for four openings in the cast.

I love this story, and it is one of the most durable in American popular culture. But with media telling it over and over, it is starting to lose its kick. (9 p.m. WMAR-Channel 2) ** 1/2

BITTERSWEET MEMORIES I know that not everyone has the Showtime Showcase premium channel, but those who do should know about a fabulous movie showing tonight at 8. The Boys of 2nd Street Park, a documentary about a group of friends growing up in Brooklyn in the 1950s and '60s, is a wise and deeply touching exploration of what life was like in post-World War II America for the children of Eastern European immigrants who came of age and became a community of friends forever in a small city park. (8 p.m., Showtime Showcase) *** 1/2
