The Earth's spin is slowing. To keep clocks in step with the sun, International Earth Rotation and Reference Systems Service, in Paris, has ordered one second added to the world's clocks at 9:59:59 EST Wednesday night, Dec. 31. This "leap second" is the 24th added to the Earth's atomic timekeeping clocks since 1972, and the first since 2005. Now, if she needs "one more second" to get ready, you won't be late.
