Jerry Lewis to receive special Oscar for his humanitarian efforts

Jerry Lewis will get his first Oscar on Feb. 22 when the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences presents the 82-year-old comic actor with the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award, which recognizes humanitarian efforts that have brought credit to the film industry.

An actor, director, writer and producer, Lewis made his big-screen debut in 1949's My Friend Irma and gained fame for his movies with partner Dean Martin.

He has been national chairman of the Muscular Dystrophy Association since 1952 and has raised more than $2 billion for the cause through his annual Labor Day telethon.

Bullish on books

Jon Stewart, Barbara Walters and other famous people would like you to buy books for the holidays.

"Books make great gifts because they're an amazing way to kill time while your Web site is buffering," Stewart jokes during a two-minute video that is part of an industry campaign,, organized by the Association of American Publishers to boost books during an especially bleak economy.

Culkin's sister dies

Police say Macaulay Culkin's sister Dakota Culkin was killed after she stepped in front of a car Tuesday night in west Los Angeles. She died of head injuries the next day at a Los Angeles hospital.

Police say the driver stopped and tried to help the 29-year-old. Officers determined that the motorist wasn't driving drunk and had followed all laws.

Macaulay Culkin's spokeswoman, Michelle Bega, said that it was a "terrible tragic accident" and that the family had no further comment.

Artists, this one's for you

Temple University will begin offering a fine arts prize worth $150,000.

The annual Wolgin International Prize in the Fine Arts will be funded by a $3.7 million gift from Jack Wolgin, a Philadelphia real estate developer, arts patron and philanthropist.

The prize will be awarded to an individual whose work "transcends traditional boundaries and exemplifies the highest level of excellence" in painting, sculpture, printmaking, photography, ceramics, metals, glass or fibers.

Usher Raymond IV - known simply as Usher - and his wife, Tameka Raymond , have a new son, who was born Wednesday.

Naviyd Ely Raymond weighs in at 5 pounds, 13 ounces. He joins older brother Usher Raymond V, who turned 1 on Nov. 26.
