Funeral services are scheduled for tomorrow for Patrick H. McDonald, a Howard County police officer who died of unknown causes while off duty at his home in Laurel on Saturday. He was 46.

Mr. McDonald, a 19-year department veteran, was a patrol officer in the Northern District. He had spent many years patrolling the Southern District and as a detective investigating property crimes in the early 1990s, according to the Police Department.

"Pat dedicated nearly two decades of his life to this agency and this community," Police Chief William J. McMahon said in a statement. "We are grateful for his service and saddened by his death."

In May, Mr. McDonald received the Maryland Retailers Association's Law Enforcement Award for his work at The Mall in Columbia. In 2007, he arrested dozens of shoplifters there.

Mr. McDonald is survived by his wife, Nicole, and four stepchildren. His funeral is scheduled for 11 a.m. tomorrow at the Gary L. Kaufman Funeral Home, 7250 Washington Blvd. in Elkridge. The viewing is to be held from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. today.
