267 to lose jobs at two firms near Baltimore

Two Baltimore-area manufacturers said yesterday that they are laying off a total of 267 workers.

Harland Clarke said it plans to shut down a check-printing operation in Glen Burnie, affecting 120 employees, by the end of March. And Solo Cup Co. is laying off 147 workers at its Owings Mills plant.

The companies said they announced the cuts to employees last month.

Harland Clarke will continue to operate its marketing services printing facility at the Glen Burnie site, which employs 155 workers and prints marketing materials for clients such as financial institutions, said Donna Hinkelman, vice president of corporate communications for the San Antonio-based company.

Harland Clarke is shifting its check printing to other plants, a decision made as part of a continuing evaluation of the production network, not because of economic conditions, Hinkelman said.

"It is part of our ongoing strategy to improve manufacturing efficiencies and better utilize plant network capacity," she said.

Spokeswoman Angie Chaplin said yesterday that job cuts at Solo Cup occurred because the company is ending production of hot cups and plastic lids at its Owings Mills plant, shifting the work elsewhere. About 950 people, including 750 hourly workers, will remain at the Owings Mills location.

"We've been working on efficiency and consolidating some operations into less space," she said.

Those job losses came in addition to an announcement last week that Solo Cup, based in Highland Park, Ill., had cut 9 percent of its corporate work force, or about 100 jobs companywide, because of the weak economy, including 29 people at its corporate offices in Owings Mills.
