HCC alumni breakfast

Harford Community College invites alumni to the HCC Alumni and Friends Association free continental breakfast at 8:30 a.m. Tuesday in the Chesapeake Center, Dining Room West.

The association is an organization of graduates, former students and friends who are interested in maintaining a relationship with the college.

Lions Club scholarship

Michael Drabo of the Bel Air Lions Club recently presented Harford Community College student Sharon Woolfrey with the Lions' 2008/2009 scholarship.

Woolfrey was selected based on her narrative, grade-point average and financial need.

Leadership academy

The Harford Leadership Academy has announced its board members for 2009.

They are: Mary Hastler, associate director, Harford County Public Library; Bridgette Johnson, business development associate, Harford County Office of Economic Development; William Nori III, vice president, Clark Turner Signature Homes LLC; and Joe Wienand, director, program integration, Edgewood Chemical Biological Center, U.S. Army Research, Development & Engineering Command.

Departing board members are Deborah Williams, Joann Blewett, Steve Clark and Denise Carnaggio.

Partnership for nursing

James LaCalle, president of Harford Community College, and Lyle Sheldon, chief executive officer of Upper Chesapeake Health System, recently signed a memorandum of understanding to enhance a nursing education partnership.

The health system provides clinical sites, staff assistance and preceptors for nursing students, while HCC provides instruction and clinical faculty. The agreement widens the partnership to include clinical and lab sites for HCC's allied health programs.

The partnership is intended to provide Harford County residents with access to a range of credit and noncredit nursing and allied health programs of study, clinical experiences, continuing education and job opportunities.

HCC No. 4 in technology

Harford Community College was recently ranked fourth for midsize colleges by the Center for Digital Education and Converge magazine in the annual list of technologically savvy community colleges.

The ranking was based on the fourth national Digital Community Colleges Survey, in which community college administrators responded to questions relating to technology ranging from online admissions, student access to transcripts and grades, information security and infrastructure, to weather and campus security alerts and online library capabilities.

Federal library program

The U.S. Government Printing Office recently posted a promotional video, "Easy as FDL: Free Information, Dedicated Service and Limitless Possibilities," about the Federal Depository Library Program, on its Web site. Harford Community College's library has taken part in the program for 40 years.

People who are knowledgeable about the FDLP, including HCC library specialist Andrea Craley, were asked for their opinions about federal depository libraries and how the FDLP benefits the public. The video can be viewed at www.fdlp.gov/promotion/easyasfdlvideo.html.

As a participant, HCC receives a variety of government publications for college and community use.
