diagnostic choices
CT scan
* Noninvasive test uses a powerful X-ray machine to take clear, detailed pictures of the heart and point out blockages. Can involve injection of dye. Performed in minutes, requiring no sedation or recovery time.
* Blockages may be fixed via catheterization.
* Costs about $1,000.
* 64-slice scanner uses moderate amount of radiation.
Cardiac catheterization
* A thin catheter is inserted in the groin area and threaded to the heart and arteries. Also uses dye and X-ray.
* Blockages found using this method can be immediately fixed via stent or balloon, if necessary. Slight risks include discomfort, bleeding or, in rare cases, serious complications. Involves sedation and recovery time can be hours.
* Costs about four times as much as CT but uses less radiation.
