N.Y. man charged in pair of 1988 Arundel rapes

A New York man has been charged in two rapes that happened 20 years ago in Anne Arundel County because of fingerprint and DNA evidence, authorities said yesterday. William Joseph Trice, 47, a tow truck driver from Eagle Bridge, N.Y., was arrested Thursday and charged with an August 1988 attack in which a woman was raped in her Annapolis home and a December 1988 attack in which a woman was raped outside her Arnold home, according to members of the Anne Arundel County state's attorney's office, Anne Arundel County police and Annapolis police who spoke at a news conference yesterday. "This is not CSI Annapolis," said State's Attorney Frank R. Weathersbee, "but nonetheless, scientific evidence and DNA have caused this investigation to be a success." According to authorities, investigators in 2005 matched DNA evidence collected from the two rape victims, leading them to believe the same person was responsible for both attacks. A fingerprint found at the Annapolis rape was run through a national database and was matched to Trice. New York State Police, who had been contacted by local authorities, picked up a cigarette butt that Trice had thrown down, and sent it Anne Arundel, where investigators found that DNA from the cigarette matched DNA from the rape scenes. Trice, who had worked as a messenger in Anne Arundel County in the 1980s, has been charged with two counts of first-degree rape and is being held in Albany pending an extradition hearing.
