City health chief part of Obama transition team

November 25, 2008|By Annie Linskey and Paul West

Baltimore Health Commissioner Dr. Joshua M. Sharfstein will be reviewing policies at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services as a member of President-elect Barack Obama's transition team, said Nick Shapiro, an Obama spokesman. The city health commissioner will split his time between Baltimore and Washington while doing the work.

Sharfstein declined to comment on his role, but Mayor Sheila Dixon said last week that she was "keeping my fingers crossed as Dr. Sharfstein participates in something tremendous that's going to be beneficial to the city."

Sharfstein assisted Obama with health policy issues during the campaign and has close ties to Rep. Henry A. Waxman, whose longtime chief of staff, Phil Schiliro, will be Obama's chief of legislative affairs.
