Woman killed on U.S. 50 by sliding police car

A Delmar woman was killed Friday night after a state trooper driving to a nearby accident scene slid on a patch of ice, struck the woman's idling car and pushed it into the back of a tractor-trailer, according to the Maryland State Police. Kristin Underkoffler, 34, of the 8700 block of Lennox Drive, was sitting in traffic on eastbound U.S. 50 shortly before 6:30 p.m. because of an accident at the Vienna bridge. Tfc. Paul Zimmerman, 48, was driving toward that accident in a marked vehicle with his emergency lights activated and sirens on when his car slid. It hit the left rear of Underkoffler's 2008 Hyundai, causing it to rotate clockwise and strike the back of the truck. Zimmerman's patrol car also hit the truck.

Occupant of trailer dies in fire in Baltimore County

One person was killed when a fire broke out in a trailer home in the first block of DeBoy Road near Old North Point Road around 9:45 p.m. last night, Baltimore County Fire Department officials said. Neighbors reported hearing an explosion, and firefighters believe that oxygen bottles in the home contributed to the explosion, department spokesman Lt. John Cromwell said early this morning. When firefighters arrived, flames were blowing out of the front and rear of the single-wide trailer. They brought the fire under control very rapidly but were unable to rescue the home's lone occupant, Cromwell said. The victim's identity was not released last night.
