Holiday workshops for kids start today

The South Laurel Recreation Council Inc. will hold holiday workshops for children ages 6 to 12, beginning today with "Countdown to Christmas." Children will decorate molded chocolate candy and make a sugarplum cottage. Children's workshops cost $5, including materials.

Older children, teens and adults can register for family workshops that teach how to make stamped greeting cards, soap and bath salts and a fleece hat and scarf. Workshops on making glass beaded ornaments, fresh flower arrangements and etched glass ornaments are also offered. Materials are included.

Workshops are held in Montpelier Carriage House and Deerfield Run Community Center in South Laurel.

Volunteers needed : Volunteer Center Serving Howard County, in cooperation with the Community Emergency Response Network, is recruiting members of the community to volunteer for local nonprofit agencies. 410-715-3179.

Free screenings : Howard County General Hospital will offer free blood pressure screenings at the Savage branch library on the second Monday of each month. The walk-in screenings will be held from noon to 3 p.m. at the library, 9525 Durness Lane. 410-740-7601, or www.hcgh.org.

Teen center : Howard County Department of Recreation and Parks has opened Freestyle, a teen drop-in center at Ridgely's Run Community Center, 8400 Mission Road, Jessup. The center, designed by teens for teens, will offer the chance to hang out with friends, play basketball and video games, listen to music and participate in other activities.
