Police said that when the men got to Montgomery County, they abandoned the truck and continued on foot. The men shed layers of clothing as they fled, said Buell, the Howard police spokesman. One turned and fired at officers and was shot by a Prince George's County police officer, according to Montgomery County police.

Police with weapons drawn stopped and searched vehicles along Greencastle Road from U.S. 29 to Old Gunpowder Road. Drivers were told to turn around unless they were residents of the area. Police said they used the "reverse 911" system to alert residents with a telephone message warning. Motorists were urged to avoid the area and refrain from picking up hitchhikers.

Police deployed dogs and officers on horseback as part of the search effort. Several nearby schools were put on lockdown.
