Which Local High School Had The Best Fall Season?

November 20, 2008|By GLENN GRAHAM

The fall season at River Hill remains a work in progress as the program's undefeated and top-ranked football team chases its second straight Class 2A state championship. With that being said, the Hawks have already made a strong argument with what has been accomplished this fall.

The girls soccer team and girls cross country team captured state titles; the boys cross country team finished runner-up; the volleyball team reached the state semifinals; the field hockey team tied Glenelg to get a piece of the Howard County championship; and the boys soccer team reached the county and regional championship games. That's a pretty full plate of success with plenty of gravy.

Aside from the field hockey team, every team mentioned is ranked No. 7 or better in The Baltimore Sun's Top 15 polls. Still, the big ticket remains football, and the Hawks (11-0) are primed to make it two straight titles. They have star power, are well-coached and played mistake-free ball in every facet.

What separates the River Hill program from all others? The Hawks have a steady stream of standout athletes coming through with fine coaching and great community support to maintain the lofty standards they have set.
