Celebrated in all 50 states, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico, National Adoption Day sees more than 300 events held throughout the country to finalize the adoptions of children in foster care, and to celebrate all families who adopt.
Lunch with Santa
The Odenton Volunteer Fire Company Ladies Auxiliary will hold a Lunch with Santa from noon to 1:30 p.m. Dec. 6 at the fire hall, 1425 Annapolis Road.
The cost is $5 per person and includes lunch and a Santa treat. Reservations with advance payment are required. Registration will be taken at the firehouse from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. tomorrow, and 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and Nov. 29. Information: 410-674-2438.
Collections for needy
Anne Arundel County Public Schools students and employees are partnering for the second consecutive year with the United Way of Central Maryland to collect food, toiletries, school supplies and other items for the county's needy.
Students as well as employees at the school system's central and satellite offices have been collecting items to be donated. Those items, and food collected by corporate partners, will be assembled in baskets during a National Family Volunteer Day event from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday at the school system's Parham Building, 2644 Riva Road, Annapolis. Approximately 200 people are expected to participate.
The National Family Volunteer Day event will also give children an opportunity to make cards for shut-ins and those in hospitals and take part in a coloring contest. Students and teams from schools are encouraged to participate by registering for the event at www.uwcm.org/family.
Annual Reindeer Run
Tom's seventh annual Reindeer Run will be held Nov. 29 at the West Laurel Community Building, 16501 Supplee Lane.
Check-in and on-site registration starts at 8 a.m. and the 5 kilometer run at 9 a.m. Refreshments, music and Santa Claus will also be available after the race.
The race is held in memory of Tom Linsenmeyer, who took his own life in March 2001 at the age of 17.
Proceeds from the race will go to Sarah's House in Fort Meade, a shelter for the homeless and those in need. Information: 410-551-7722.
