Literacy effort

The Literacy Education Department of Harford Community College is seeking volunteers to assist instructors in Adult Basic Education programs and English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) classes next spring around the county.

An adult math class and an ESOL class meet from 9:30 a.m. to noon Mondays and Wednesdays at the Edgewood library.

No specialized training is necessary.

Tuition discount offered

St. John the Evangelist School will offer a tuition discount to families who are active members of any Roman Catholic church in the area.

Prospective families should contact the school or attend its open house from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. Tuesday. The school's Web site is www.stjohnhydes.org.

St. John's is one of the oldest parochial schools in Baltimore County, with an enrollment of 257 students in pre-K through grade eight. The 2008-2009 school year marks the 150th anniversary of this Middle States-accredited school.
