THE WEATHER BLOG

November 14, 2008|By FRANK ROYLANCE | FRANK ROYLANCE,frank.roylance@baltsun.com

Readers are already asking me why the earliest sunset (4:43 p.m. in Baltimore) occurs on Dec. 7, and not on the winter solstice, Dec. 21. I get these queries every year, and my head explodes trying to explain it in eight lines. Blame the difference between sun time and clock time, which also pushes the latest sunrise to Jan. 4 (7:27 a.m.). But rest assured that the shortest day still occurs with the solstice, on Dec. 21.
