Used cell phones to benefit Relay for Life in the county

The Howard County Department of Recreation and Parks is collecting used cell phones in a program to raise money to benefit Howard County's Relay for Life.

Women's Hall of Fame

The Howard County Commission for Women is accepting nominations of outstanding women to be admitted into the 2009 Women's Hall of Fame.

The Hall of Fame will induct up to five contemporary women and one woman from the past who have achieved distinction in their work, made lasting contributions to the community and improved the quality of life for others.

Nominees must be natives of Howard County or residents for at least 10 consecutive years. The inductees will be honored at a public ceremony March 12.

Nominations are due by Wednesday. Forms are available online at www.howardcountymd.gov/Cit izenServices; at county library branches; by calling 410-313-6400; or by e-mailing women@howard countymd.gov.

The nomination packet can be mailed to the Commission for Women, Women's Hall of Fame Committee, 6751 Columbia Gateway Drive, Suite 300, Columbia 21046. It must contain a completed nomination form, three letters of recommendation, a typed biographical account of no more than two pages, and a black-and-white, 5-by-7-inch head-and-shoulder photograph.

A directory of resources

The Association of Community Services has published its new 2009 community resources directory, Looking for Answers? A Directory of Services. The free 2009 edition of the directory is available in schools, libraries, banks, community centers and elsewhere in Howard County.

The directory lists more than 140 Howard County public and private agencies, their services and contact information. It is available at ACS offices, 10480 Little Patuxent Parkway, Suite 920, Columbia, between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m.

Veterans Day closings

Howard County government offices, courts, the animal shelter and library branches will be closed Tuesday in observance of the Veterans Day holiday.

Regular trash and recycling services will be in effect, and the landfill will be open. Howard Transit will offer weekday service and parking regulations and fees will be in effect.

The 911 Center, Police and fire departments are staffed 24 hours a day, seven days a week. For emergencies, call 911. For nonemergencies, call 410-313-2200.
