Gluten-free cooking to be examined

As part of its new life-enhancement series, Columbia Art Center will offer a presentation on "The Art of Gluten-Free Cooking," from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. tomorrow at the center, 6100 Foreland Garth in Long Reach Village Center.

Jules Dowler Shepard, an artist and an expert in gluten-free cooking and author of Nearly Normal Cooking for Gluten-Free Eating and The First Year: Celiac Disease and Living Gluten-Free, will offer insights on gluten-free flours, shopping, eating out and traveling.

The program is designed for people of all ages who avoid gluten because of celiac disease, gluten intolerance or autism. Gluten-free refreshments will be available.

The cost is $10; $5 for those younger than 18.

The east Columbia library, 660 Cradlerock Way, will offer a community interest book discussion at 7 p.m. Nov. 19.

The Autobiography of Malcolm X , by Alex Haley, will be discussed.

Help needed : A-OK (Assist Our Kids) Mentoring/Tutoring Program is recruiting volunteers to work with Howard County elementary and middle schools. Volunteers are needed during school hours and after school until 6 p.m. Volunteers should be able to dedicate an hour a week for a school year. Dancing : Long Reach Community Association is offering fall dance classes for those ages 3 to adult. The 12-week sessions include classes in first steps, preballet, combinations, classical ballet, jazz, tap, pointe, hip-hop and modern. Exhibition, lecture : Oakland Mills Community Association's Music and Arts Committee will sponsor a free exhibition, lecture and reception featuring collages and prints by artist George Sakkal from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m. today at The Other Barn, 5851 Robert Oliver Place, in Oakland Mills Village Center. The reception is planned from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. The artist will speak from 4 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. Sakkal, a retired architect, uses small pieces of paper to create a sophisticated fantasy world. 410-730-1129.
