Mayer center marking 10 years with fundraiser

The Claudia Mayer Cancer Center will celebrate its 10 years of support for cancer patients, their families and caregivers with a fundraiser from 6 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. Thursday at the Fretz Corp., 9204 Berger Road, Suite H, Columbia.

The event will include cocktails and cuisine provided by businesses and contributors, entertainment, and cooking demonstrations in a kitchen showroom. The Fretz Corp. is a wholesaler of kitchen products

Dinner will be provided by Jesse Wong's Asian Bistro. Wine selections have been donated by the Kalaris family, and a martini bar will be provided by Trapeze restaurant. The cost is $65.

The Claudia Mayer Cancer Center, a service of Howard County General Hospital, includes a library and a fully equipped salon where cancer patients can receive free consultations from aestheticians, cosmetologists, hair stylists and prosthesis professionals.

Library seeks your histories

The Howard County Library invites residents to be interviewed as part of the "This is Your Life" project between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. Nov. 20 in the Administrative Offices Conference Room of the east Columbia library, 6600 Cradlerock Way, Columbia.

"This is Your Life" is a countywide initiative to encourage people ages 50 and older to record their personal histories, including memories of holiday seasons and past elections. The Columbia Archives will preserve the memories in its permanent collection.

Run with Meals on Wheels

Meals on Wheels of Howard County will hold its first 5K & 1 Mile Fun Run/Walk at 9 a.m. Saturday in Meadowbrook Park, 5001 Meadowbrook Lane, Ellicott City.

Registration is $30; $35 on race day, when registration will be available from 7:30 a.m. to 8:30 a.m. The cost is $10 for those ages 10 and older; children ages 9 or younger may participate without cost.

Disaster preparedness

Howard County Executive Ken Ulman has proclaimed this week Community Readiness Week in the county. Events during the week will emphasize the importance of individual and family preparedness for possible disasters.

A drive-through flu clinic will offer vaccinations from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. today at the Columbia Gateway Drive Loop. Information: 410-313-6503.

Operation People-Mover, an exercise conducted by the Office of Emergency Management, will test the county's ability to evacuate residents in case of a disaster from 8 a.m. to noon tomorrow. The location is to be announced. Information: 410-313-6030.

"Ready When the Time Comes" training will be offered from 6 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. Thursday at the Savage branch library, 9525 Durness Lane, North Laurel. Information: 410-715-3172.

A Child Safety Seat Inspection will be available from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. Friday at Clarksville Volunteer Fire Station No. 5, 5000 Signal Bell Lane, Clarksville. Appointments are not necessary.

The county's automated community notification system will call households each day between 9 a.m. and 9 p.m. Residents will receive a message to remind them that the system is in place for use in emergencies.

Candidates forum on TV

The congressional candidates forum for the 3rd and 7th Districts, held Oct. 7, will be rebroadcast on Howard Community College channels (Verizon 41 and Comcast 96) from 2 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. tomorrow.

The forum will be rebroadcast on GTV channels (Verizon 44 and Comcast 99) 12:30 p.m. to 2 p.m. tomorrow.

Thrift shop open Sundays

Charity's Closet, a women's thrift shop run by teenage girls, has changed its hours from Saturdays to Sundays, noon to 5 p.m.

All items are $5; jeans and jewelry are sold on a buy-one-get-one-free basis. Proceeds benefit Success in Style, which provides free business wardrobes to women in need who are seeking employment. The store is at 9090 Frederick Road, at St. Johns Lane, in Ellicott City.

Scholarship nominations

The Columbia Association is seeking nominations for the Spirit of Columbia Scholarship Award, given each year to Columbia high school seniors who have shown dedication to community service.

This year, as many as six $2,500 scholarships will be awarded to graduating high school seniors who live on Columbia Association-assessed property or have a parent who works full time on such property.

They must have at least a C average and have a history of volunteer service to the community.
