Free program on diabetes

The East Columbia 50+ Center, in the east Columbia library, 6600 Cradlerock Way, will offer a free program on diabetes and carbohydrate control from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. tomorrow.

Nutritional consultant Rona Martiyan will offer recipes and talk about healthy eating for those affected by diabetes and controlling carbohydrates. There will be an opportunity to ask questions.

Jan Brady, a professional organizer, will explain how to organize home-filing systems from 2:30 p.m. to 4 p.m. Nov. 10 at the 50+ center. She will explain what needs to be saved, and how and where to file.

The center will offer a free candlelight concert from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. Nov. 18. Matt Bacon of the Peabody Institute will perform. A reception with light refreshments is planned from 6:30 p.m. to 7 p.m.

Free art exhibition and lecture set

The Oakland Mills Community Association's Music and Arts Committee will sponsor a free exhibition, lecture and reception featuring collages and prints by artist George Sakkal from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m. Nov. 9 at The Other Barn, 5851 Robert Oliver Place, in Oakland Mills Village Center.

The reception is planned from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. The artist will speak from 4 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. Sakkal, a retired architect who has traveled the world, uses small pieces of paper to create a sophisticated fantasy world.

Help needed : A-OK (Assist Our Kids) Mentoring/Tutoring Program is recruiting volunteers to work with Howard County elementary and middle schools. Volunteers are needed during school hours and after school until 6 p.m. Volunteers should be able to dedicate an hour a week for a school year. Dancing : Long Reach Community Association is offering fall dance classes for those ages 3 to adult. The 12-week sessions include classes in first steps, preballet, combinations, classical ballet, jazz, tap, pointe, hip-hop and modern. Classes, therapies : East Columbia 50+ Center is offering appointments for reflexology - deep foot massage - from 5:15 p.m. to 7:45 p.m. Mondays. The cost is $45 for an hour of treatment. Appointments are also available 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Fridays. 410-313-7680.
