Nature walks set at refuge

The U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service's Patuxent Research Refuge will offer a Bird Walk for all ages from 8:15 a.m. to 10:15 a.m. Nov. 9 at the refuge's North Tract, on Route 198 between the Baltimore-Washington Parkway and Route 32, south of Laurel. Field guides and binoculars are recommended.

An Owl Prowl for all ages is planned from 4:30 p.m. to 6 p.m. Nov. 9. Participants will look and listen for owls and other nocturnal animals on the guided walk.

Bird walks for ages 16 and older are planned at the National Wildlife Visitor Center from 8 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. Nov. 12, 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. Nov. 14, 8 a.m. to 1 a.m. Nov. 18 and 8 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. Nov. 19. Field guides and binoculars are recommended.

The National Wildlife Visitor Center is off Powder Mill Road, east of the Baltimore-Washington Parkway and south of Laurel.

The programs are free; donations to the Friends of Patuxent are appreciated. Reservations are required.

Volunteers needed : The Volunteer Center Serving Howard County, in cooperation with the Community Emergency Response Network, is recruiting members of the community to local nonprofit agencies in need of volunteers. 410-715-3179.

For kids : Children's classes at the Savage branch library, 9525 Durness Lane, include "Play Partners," a 20- to 30-minute program for infants through toddlers (age 23 months) with an adult at 10 a.m. and 11 a.m. Wednesdays through Nov. 19. Registration is not needed.

* "3, 2, FUN!" for ages 2 and 3 with an adult, is offered at 10 a.m. Tuesdays through Nov. 18. Registration is not needed.

* "Just for Me," for children ages 3 to 5 who are ready for an independent class, is offered at 1:30 p.m. Tuesdays through Nov. 18.

* "Picture Book Parade!" for the same age group, with an adult, will be offered at 7 p.m. Tuesdays through Nov. 18; 10 a.m. Thursdays through Nov. 20; and 10 a.m. Fridays (with a craft) through Nov. 21.

* "Pajama Time," a 30-minute program for children of all ages who must be accompanied by an adult, is offered at 7 p.m. Thursdays through Nov. 20. Registration is not required. 410-880-5978.

Holiday crafts : The South Laurel Recreation Council Inc. will present its 33rd anniversary Holiday Craft Fair from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Nov. 9 at Deerfield Run Community Center, 13000 Laurel-Bowie Road (Route 197) in South Laurel.

Artists and artisans will display and sell their work, demonstrate their crafts and accept commissions. Lunch, beverages and snacks will be served all day. Bake sales by community organizations will offer treats and holiday baked goods.

Admission is free, and free parking is available a quarter-mile west of the Baltimore-Washington Parkway on Route 197. Continuous free shuttle service will be available from Towne Center Shopping Center at Route 197 and Contee Road. 301-776-2805.
