State fund, Annapolis join in tree plantings

As part of a reforestation and beautification program, the Maryland Automobile Insurance Fund joined with Annapolis Mayor Ellen O. Moyer and the Annapolis city council to plant more than two dozen trees around Annapolis Walk Community Center, near MAIF's Forest Drive headquarters.

MAIF Deputy Executive Director John Banghart said of Friday's planting: "MAIF has been and remains committed to working toward a greener, more environmentally friendly business model."

In addition to the trees planted at the community center, MAIF will donate 100 trees to a giveaway sponsored by the city of Annapolis.

Water system grant

County Executive John R. Leopold recently accepted a $100,000 endowment from Constellation Energy to assist residents who need help to repair failing wells and septic systems.

The funds will supplement the county's Well and Septic System Assistance Program, which helps low-income residents upgrade failing systems, or install a water treatment system in their home.

Lions Club fruit sale

The Severn River Lions Club is holding a citrus fruit sale to support community projects.

Available fruits are seedless ruby red grapefruit ( 2/5 bushel, $17; 4/5 bushel, $30); seedless navel oranges ( 2/5 bushel, $16; 4/5 bushel $28); or mixed oranges and grapefruit ( 2/5 bushel, $18).

Deadline for orders is Nov. 15. Pickup is 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Nov. 22 at Severna Park High School. Any remaining fruit will be sold on a first-come, first-served basis.

Future sales will be held Dec. 20, Jan. 17, Feb. 21 and March 21.

Winterthur excursion

The Shady Side Rural Heritage Society will sponsor a trip Dec. 9 to see Winterthur in Delaware decked out in its Christmas finery.

The bus will leave at 8 a.m. from the Kmart parking lot in Edgewater and return about 5 p.m.

The cost is $55 for society members and $62 for nonmembers. Deadline for reservations is Nov. 15. Information: 410-267-0654.
