Howard hospital names departmental chairmen

Dr. William F. Atha has been appointed director of the emergency medicine department at Howard County General Hospital. He recently served as deputy director of the department; then, as interim director.

Board certified in emergency medicine, Dr. Atha received his medical degree from the University of Maryland School of Medicine and completed his residency at Johns Hopkins Hospital.

Dr. Michael G. Macon has been elected chairman of the hospital's surgery department. A member of the hospital's professional staff since 1994, he previously served as assistant chairman of surgery and president of the professional staff.

He received his medical degree from George Washington School of Medicine and completed his internship and residency at St. Agnes Hospital in Baltimore.

Dr. Andrew W. Morton has been named chairman of the hospital's diagnostic imaging department. He has served as assistant chairman since 2004. He completed his internship and residency at the University of Maryland Medical Center, and a fellowship in interventional radiology at Johns Hopkins Hospital.

Dr. James D. Nowakaowski has been appointed chairman of the anesthesiology department; Dr. Joseph M. Schwartz has been named chairman of the psychiatry department; and Dr. Michael E. Silverman has been elected chairman of the department of medicine.

Federation appoints Adler

Deborah Adler has been appointed executive director of the Jewish Federation of Howard County, a nonprofit organization devoted to the welfare of the Howard County Jewish community.

A Howard County resident for 27 years, Adler was campaign chairwoman for the federation from 2004 to 2006 and has served on the organization's executive board for the past five years.

She was development manager for the Israel Project, a nonprofit communications organization working to protect Israel.
