Mervo, Western runners score big

The Mervo boys and Western girls scored easy victories in yesterday's Baltimore City cross country championships at Herring Run Park.

Anthony Rogers of Mervo won the race in 17 minutes, 29 seconds.

The Mustangs put three runners in the top 10 to finish with 39 points, rolling over Digital Harbor (85) and Forest Park (100).

Western fared even better on the girls' side. The Doves placed four runners in the top 10, including winner Brinae Robinson. She captured first place in a time of 20:57.

Western finished with 26 points to beat Digital Harbor (50) and Dunbar (63).


The Glenelg boys stood in second place after the first day of the Class 2A-1A state golf tournament yesterday at Potomac Ridge in Waldorf. North Point (330) led the team competition, ahead of the Gladiators (348).

Mattthew Philie (third, 79) and Alex Taylor (tied for fifth, 81) led Glenelg.

Pikesville's Sam Oshrine (seventh, 82) was the only other local golfer in the top 10.

The qualifiers from all four classes will finish the tournament today.
