Bulbs, and other gardening tips

Howard County Master Gardeners is presenting programs on gardening in the new woodland theater at the Whipps Garden Cemetery, 3651 St. Johns Lane, Ellicott City.

Judy Petersen will discuss planting bulbs for year-round color in the landscape at 1 p.m. Saturday. The rain date is Oct. 19. Refreshments will be served. Admission is free.

The restored 19th-century cemetery, owned by the Friends of the Whipps Cemetery and Memorial Gardens Inc., is now a public garden-park. A small rustic outdoor theater was built in 2007 by Boy Scout Troop 1997.

Breaking in as a freelance writer

CityLit Project will offer its first program in Howard County, "Rookie Reporting: Breaking Into Freelance Writing," with Laura Shovan, from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Thursdays, this week through Nov. 20 at the Howard County Center for the Arts, 8510 High Ridge Road, Ellicott City.

Moms meet : The MOMS Club of Ellicott City South, part of a nonprofit international organization that provides support for mothers who have chosen to stay home to raise children, meets to socialize, bring their children together and hear speakers. A nursery is open during meetings, although children are welcome to remain with their parents. Outings and activities are also planned, including a monthly event called "MOMS Night Out."
