A car crashed into a broken-down bus in Columbia yesterday afternoon, sending five people to the hospital with minor injuries, Howard County police said.

Shortly before 1 p.m., a 2000 Acura driven by a 42-year-old Columbia man plowed into a public bus that had broken down in a traffic lane on Broken Land Parkway near Cradlerock Way, Howard County police Lt. Morris Carroll said. Five of the 10 passengers on the bus were taken to the hospital after complaining of neck pain, and two others received treatment at the scene. Neither driver was injured, Carroll said.

The hazard lights on the bus were flashing, and the driver of the Acura, whose name has not been released, crashed into it because of "inattention," Carroll said. Charges against the Acura driver are pending, he said.
